People live their lives, yet at times they lose sight of what life means.

We think through language. And yet language is porous: our minds often slip away from words.

When we try to say something, something remains unsaid: a sense of longing, a feeling of frustration, faint impressions that have drifted away.

The French philosopher Henri Bergson wrote that even what we feel slips away from us, hidden beneath labels.

To hold fast to what we experience—or, conversely, not to be held by what would hold us—is difficult, and takes time and effort.

When we lay before us what has happened and what is happening, and listen closely, there are forgotten sounds to be heard.

At our fingertips, a subtle world: rough, yet warm.

To look closely at a moment as it gradually fades requires a certain patience and skill. Meaning is already there before the person who experiences it. A feeling or a state of affairs is already at work before we grasp it. So looking is not a matter of making something appear; it is a way of reaching, slowly and belatedly, toward what is already at work.

That is why looking never comes to an end. Each time, one aspect comes into view, and through it, a little more of the whole emerges. Looking does not move toward a conclusion; it returns, again and again.

Before naming a feeling, we look at how it came to be: what was there first, what cannot be removed without making it something else, what it does in the present, and what shape of time it takes. We place it beside feelings with similar names, look closely at the cases at its edges, and leave the places that do not fit unfilled rather than rushing to fill them.

We look for the particular contours of a moment that allow us to say: this is that feeling, as it happens.

Meaning—yet beyond the word, which is only a sign—we ask what moments it is actually made of. As those moments are woven together and shaped anew, each piece of music took form.
