Ballade : Korea

삶은 시간을 전제한다.

이는 시간을 다루는 예술가들이 가장 잘 알고 있을 것이다.

그러나 한편으로, 삶은 공간, 그리고 상호작용을 전제한다.

우리의 삶은 타자 없이 이루어질 수 없고,

우리는 누군가의 자식이자 누군가의 부모이기도 하고, 동료나 친구, 때로는 경쟁자이자 협력자로서 끊임없이 관계 속에 놓여 있다.

다른 시간은 다른 존재를 만들어낸다.

우리가 한 개인일 때조차,

그 삶 전체를 배경으로 한 개인이자, 어떤 사회 속에 있는 것이 전제된 한 개인이다.

우리는 우리 삶과 사회의 변화 속에서 살아가고, 이는 우리의 정신과 생각에 영향을 미친다.

누군가의 삶의 시간은, 그 존재를 만들어간다.

그렇다면 현재 한국을 살아가는 사람들의 공통된 배경이자, 우리 존재의 일부를 만드는 '한국'이라는 역사와 사회는 무엇일까?

경쟁적이면서 정이 있고, 현실적이면서도 한편으로는 생각 한 편에 이상에 대한 추구가 있게 하는, 우리 존재와 생각의 배경으로서의 한국의 역사. 지정학적으로 필연적인 갈등과 경쟁의 한국, 그러면서도 사람과 관계와 이상을 추구하는 우리의 배경인 한국이 거쳐온 시간에 대하여 다룬 곡이다.

Life presupposes time.
Artists who work with time understand this most intimately.
Yet life also presupposes space—and interaction.
Our lives cannot exist without others; we are all someone’s child and someone’s parent, a colleague, a friend, sometimes a rival, and at other times, a collaborator. We exist continuously within relationships.

Different times create different beings.

​

Even as individuals, we are never isolated; each of us exists against the background of our own life and within a particular society. We live amid the changes of our time and our community, and those changes inevitably shape our thoughts and spirit. The time of one’s life is what forms one’s being.

Then what is the shared background of those living in Korea today—what is this “Korea,” the history and society that constitute part of who we are?

It is a Korea both competitive and affectionate, pragmatic yet still quietly drawn toward ideals. It is a history that has shaped the temperament of our existence. A land of inevitable conflict and competition born of its geography, and yet a people who persist in seeking human connection, relationship, and idealism.
This work reflects upon that time—the time that Korea, and we who live within it, have passed through.
