‘코랄 판타지(Chorale Fantasy)’라는 장르는 그 명칭은 널리 알려져 있으나, 실제로 이를 작품으로 남긴 작곡가는 바흐(J.S. Bach), 베토벤(L. v. Beethoven), 그리고 이신우 등 극소수에 불과할 만큼 희귀하다.

코랄(Chorale)은 교회음악 전통에 뿌리를 둔 형식으로, 단순하면서도 견고한 선율과 화성이 특징이다. 이는 화려한 기술적 장식보다는 깊이와 진정성을 지향하며, 인간적인 힘과 진솔함, 나아가 신앙에 가까운 경건한 무게감을 표현한다. 반면 판타지(Fantasy)는 형식의 구속 없이 자유롭고 예측 불가능한 전개 속에서 즉흥성과 풍부한 음악적 상상력을 펼쳐내는 양식이다.

이 상반된 두 세계가 결합한 ‘코랄 판타지’는 코랄의 숭고한 무게와 판타지의 자유로운 변주가 맞닿는 지점에서 인간의 삶을 진지하게 관찰한다. 작품의 근간을 이루는 코랄의 묵직한 정서와 보편적 감수성 위에 판타지의 자유로운 형식이 더해짐으로써, 삶의 흐름과 변화, 갈등과 성장에 이르는 인간 경험의 다채로운 단면을 생생하게 투영한다.

The "Choral Fantasy" is a rare genre in the musical canon. Despite its familiar name, only a few composers—most notably J.S. Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Shin-uh Lee—have explored this form in their creative output.
