Flute Sonata No.1 <Epiphany>

소나타는 서양음악사에서 오래된 장르 중 하나로, 시간의 변천에 따라 여러 다른 모습을 보이지만, 소나타가 가장 중요한 시기였던 베토벤을 전후로한 고전~낭만시대에는, 단일한 주제가 아닌 둘 이상의 다원적 주제와 그 갈등을 기반으로 한 음악 형식이 되었다.

소나타에서는 주제가 되는 선율 · 모티브가 시간의 전개에 따라 다양한 모습으로 변형되고 변화되며, 모습의 변화 뿐만 아니라 시간과 상호작용에 따른 변화를 드러낸다. 그 변화와 상호작용은, 때로는 조화의 모습으로, 때로는 갈등으로 나타나며, 그 갈등과 조화가 또 다른 변화의 계기와 동력이 된다. 우리가 우리의 삶을 마주할 때 발견하는 것은, 우리가 소나타에서 소리와 시간의 조화가 이루는 것을 발견할 때와 같이, 정확히 이해할 수 없지만 무언가를 깨닫는 것과 비슷하다. 삶은 우리에게 살아가는 과정으로 주어지지만, 삶을 무언가로 이해하기 위해서는 역설적으로 삶과의 거리가 필요하다.

우리는 자신의 삶을 통해 무언가를 만들어내는 것에서 감동을 받는다. 그것은 역경과 성취일 수도 있지만, 이타적인 헌신 자체일 수도, 장인의 삶을 통해 이루는 것일 수도 있다. 그러나 단지 한 명의 인간으로서의 삶 자체에서도 우리는 무언가를 발견한다. 부모의 삶, 자녀의 성장과 같은 것으로부터도 우리 마음에 울림이 일어나는 것을 발견한다.

<플루트 소나타 1번: 에피파니>는 이렇게, 우리 자신에게 의미있는 무언가—에피파니로서 다가오는 우리 자신의 삶, 우리를 움직이는 우리 자신의 삶에 대한 유비이다.

The sonata is one of the oldest genres in Western music history. Although its form has taken many shapes over time, it reached its most significant development during the Classical and Romantic eras, particularly around Beethoven. In this period, the sonata became a musical form not of a single theme, but of multiple, contrasting themes — a structure founded on tension and dialogue between different ideas.

In a sonata, the thematic melody or motif transforms and evolves as time unfolds. These transformations not only alter its appearance but also reveal its interactions with musical time itself. Such interactions — sometimes expressed through harmony, sometimes through conflict — become the source of further transformation and energy. What we encounter in life is much like what we experience in a sonata: an interplay between sound and time that cannot be perfectly understood, yet leads us toward a certain realization. Life is given to us as a process of living, yet paradoxically, to understand it, we must sometimes step back and observe it from a distance.

We are deeply moved when we witness a life that creates something meaningful — whether through struggle and achievement, through selfless dedication, or through the devotion of a craftsman. Yet even in the simplest human existence itself, we find meaning: in the life of a parent, in the growth of a child, we sense a resonance that touches us deeply.

Flute Sonata No. 1: Epiphany is, in this sense, a metaphor for our own lives — a reflection on the moments that come to us as revelations, and on the life within us that continues to move and transform.
